With that, may God bless the efforts taken here that his children may grow in grace and in knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ through the study
and use of the Westminster Shorter Catechism. In the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord spoke of a wise man that built his house upon a rock;
and the storms, winds, and floods came, and the house still stood. That man was building his life on the teaching of the Lord Jesus and it stood in
the face of many trials. It is evident that Christ was looking both at the moment, and down the corridors of time even to the present age in which
we live. Christ knew all the storms that would be hurled against his people; the gales of scientific pretension, of philosophy and humanism, of materialism and fleshiness. Yet every Christian
who stands on the teachings of the Lord is promised survival within the storms of this life. The Savior was absolutely confident about that fact for those
who would rightly build upon the Rock of their salvation. The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, `Retain the standard of sound words which you have
heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to
you." (2Tim. 1:13-14) To that end, the Session of WOPC again commends you to the study of the faith of our Fathers found in our Secondary Standards,
that teach so well the Scriptures that are alone "able to make wise unto salvation."
One final introductory comment concerning how the following study is arranged and presented. Each study starts with an opening comment, followed by the particular catechism question under consideration, along with Scripture references; after which the question is restated leading into the series of questions tied to TRAINING HEARTS, TEACHING MINDS by Starr Meade. Reference is also provided to the applicable and parallel section(s) of the Westminster Confession of Faith and Larger Catechism. In addition to this, another excellent source of on-line study is provided in a link to the Westminster Shorter Catechism Project, placed on the Internet by the Bible Presbyterian Church. The URL address is http://www.bpc.org/wsc/. Along with content related to individual questions with answers and additional scripture references, links are also provided to the works by John Flavel, Thomas Watson, Thomas Boston, James Fisher, Matthew Henry, and John Whitecross. May the Lord bless these studies to the end that His name be gloried in and through you to His eternal praise and enjoyment; which is the chief end of man as taught by WSC Question #1. Yours in Christ,
